The Money Management
Guide for Women
Womankinds Financial
Literacy Project
Handbook is Now an e-Book!
Money Order is now available! It was published by Simon
& Schuster in 2001 to coincide with the fifth anniversary of Womankinds
Financial Literacy Project.
Money Order addresses key issues of basic financial management,
specifically as they relate to women and girls. It provides the tools to enable
women to become competent and confident money managers, able to make informed
financial decisions, by:
-
Exploring the cultural, social, and personal factors which shape our attitudes
about money
-
Transforming the way we think about and handle our economic lives
-
Introducing basic financial management for women: determining our needs, setting
goals, and making a plan to achieve these goals.
Money Order Overview
Why are so many women afraid or unwilling to address money issues?
What personal and societal factors hold women back from achieving financial independence?
What is the basic financial information that every woman needs to know? How can
women work together to make positive changes not only in our own lives, but also
in the lives of all women?
Money Order, collaboratively written by and for women,
de-mystifies the often-confusing and intimidating world of money. Presented in
an easy-to-read format, Money Order enables women to take control of our
own financial well being by:
-
setting and achieving financial goals
-
overcoming fear, reluctance, or dislike of money
-
communicating more effectively with financial professionals
-
growing to be more confident and competent managers of money
-
becoming aware of the enormous potential power of women's collective philanthropy
and its implications.
A personal finance manual grounded in the ideals of egalitarian
economics, Money Order is based on edited transcripts of Womankind Educational
and Resource Center, Inc.'s FINANCIAL LITERACY PROJECT (FLP) introductory financial
management classes. Women accountants, attorneys, auto dealers, bankers, financial
planners, insurance agents, mortgage specialists, stock brokers and other professionals
- who adhere to a strict "no selling" policy - present weekly lectures
and answer questions.
Women of all ages, income and educational levels, and from different
cultural backgrounds and family situations learn together. Each brings her unique
perspective and experience to class.
Students stories and experiences are woven liberally into
the text of Money Order, as every student has something to teach as well
as to learn.
Designed to be used by individual women or by groups of women,
Money Order offers a unique combination of four essential elements:
-
solid financial information presented in short, easy-to-read chapters with
lots of graphics
-
woman-to-woman teaching, in a voice both collegial and conversational
-
personal stories by FLP alumnae, who represent women of many ages and backgrounds
-
strong encouragement for personal empowerment and collaborative change.
Money Order aims to help women become financially literate
and economically self-sufficient, within the broader framework of transforming
the way all women think about, relate to and handle money. The goal is to open
women's eyes, change our lives and increase our options.
